Welcome to St. Mary CCW Friends

A place for Catholic women fellowship and service

Let us Pray

Prayer to Our Lady of Good Counsel

God of heavenly wisdom, you have given us Mary, the Mother of Jesus, to be our guide and counselor. Grant that we may always seek her Motherly help in this life and so enjoy Her blessed presence in the life to come. O Mother of Good Counsel, Patroness of the National Council of Catholic Women, intercede for us that we may be wise, courageous and loving leaders of the Church. Help us dear Mother, to know the mind of Jesus, you Son. May the Holy Spirit fill us with reverence for God's creation, and compassion for all God's children. May our labors of love on earth enhance the reign of God and may God's gifts of faith and living hope prepare us for the fullness of the world to come. Amen

Mission and Background

St. Mary's Council of Catholic Women was established with the purpose of uniting all women of the parish through service to others, spiritual development and social interaction.  It is our prayer that God will guide, strengthen and bless us as we do His work. To maintain a strong and effective organization, we will continue to encourage the participation of all the women of the parish.  All women of St. Mary Parish are considered CCW members and are encouraged to participate in any and all activities! We support the operation of guilds formed to promote specific interests. One does not need to be in a guild to attend our meetings.

Our History
(Herstory)

There is a longstanding tradition of service from the Catholic Women of St. Mary's Parish

1943-1951

St. Mary Parish origins

The story of St. Mary's Parish is unusual in the annals of modern Church History.  Officially founded in 1943, there was neither church nor school until Sept 11 1950! There were no outward signs of its existence - - no structures, schools or church building.  All religious affiliations shared government non-denominational chapels in the fenced in area known as Oak Ridge.  It was not until the gates were opened that churches were actually established.  St. Mary school was opened in 1950 and the first Mass celebrated on Dec 10, more than 7 years after the first Mass of Thanksgiving was offered in the "Secret City" on Aug 22 1943; but it would not be until Aug 1962 that the existing St. Mary Church building was completed and dedicated.

1946-1947

First movements in  Women's Organization

Father Mc Redmond saw the need to organize the parish ladies' efforts.  In Oct 1946, he appointed the first chair, who served until the first president was elected in Jan 1947. The women's work expanded and flourished fundraising and furnishing items for the new convent, school and priests. The CWC represented their Catholic faith through their many efforts and grew in community throughout this time.

1976

More connections and a new name

The Catholic Women's Club's name was changed in 1976 to reflect the connection to the deanery, diocese and national organization.  The group of women continued their efforts by hosting rummage sales, providing social and spiritual opportunities and participating in parish wide events like the Fall Festival.

1986

Changes with the times

In 1986, the council experienced a slackening of membership and interest, so the board re-evaluated and restructured the group forming 12 small guilds which would reflect different interests and offer opportunities for flexible meetings. The council continued to plan large group events to bring all members together as well such as the Christ Child Shower that provided baby shower gifts to TN Right to Life and Catholic Charities in their ongoing work and support of young mothers. In addition, usually smaller guild-run events provided ample opportunities for women to participate.  With this change also came a guild rotation through several works of service provided by the women including funeral receptions and Altar care.

2021

Today

The guild system is still in use today, although the focus may change and certain guilds are more active than others. In fact a new guild (St. Brigid) was formed in 2021 to focus on Hospitality. The Women of St. Mary continue to strive to serve their parish and community while enriching each other with their fellowship.  There is always ample opportunity to expand or create new ways participate and find long lasting relationships.
